"Fliegender Wechsel" at Gedok Stuttgart

3x3: Grasp the Immaterial Snapshot _Process Review 02
Paulina Sadrak -
  Poland, Lodz
Nanna Aspholm-Flik - Germany/Finland, Stuttgart/Tampere

 Heike Ehrath - Germany, Sulzbach

The 3x3 uses English as means of co
 mmunication.

The international 3x3 team spent September 2023 as artis
t residents at Haihatus Art Center in Joutsa, Finland. Their self-init
iated textile-process-project was launched in February 2023 and it spa
ns three years and covers three countries. In an open-end process, in
Finland, Germany and Poland, the unfolding and taking hold of the imma
terial in textiles, grasping its past in the present, is explored. Eac
h team-member defines her own focus and route.

Paulina, Nanna and He
ike are professional international textile makers and educators (art a
cademy, teachers’ college, weaving centers). Individually they engag
e in a wide scope of textile-related activities through research, fibe
r art and crafts’ exhibitions, competition-participation, curating,
 museum-collaborations, etc.

Hand weaving as an artistic and craft te
chnique is highly valued and still present in Finland. The numerous Ta
ito-centers of the Finnish Crafts Association Taitoliitto commit to up
holding, disseminating and modernizing old craft skills, including wea
ving. In Finland Taitoliitto is UNESCO’s partner.

The 3x3-team’s
collaboration with and exchange at Taito-Joutsa was a rewarding two-w
ay exchange. A non-hierarchical and collegial contact with Finnish tex
tile craft-experts was possible. The professional equipment at the Tai
to-crafts center enabled the team’s immediate immersion in the hands
  on textile-making.

In the studio at Utopia House, Haihatus Art Cent
er, the project’s playful and experimental side came to fruition. Br
anches, gras, flowers, mushrooms and blueberries from the surrounding
woods were spread out as source of inspiration and crafting in an insp
iring laboratory-like testing ground. Art was exhibited, some of which
is now on show at the Gedok Gallery.

The 3x3-team had access to the
Haihatus Gallery starting 23 September. A 3x3: Grasp the Immaterial Sn
apshot _Process Review 01 was organized with the aim to reach out and
interact with the local Joutsa community. Spanning numerous days, the
common public, school-classes, women’s groups and private visits wer
e accommodated. The 3x3-team presented thoughts and works of their “
Grasping the Immaterial” explorations and invited and encouraged eve
ryone to craft-interactions in the many workshops. Digitally the vitas
, activities and works of the 3x3 team were shown as a beamer-projecti
on in the gallery-space. A learning with and from each other took plac
 e.

In late March 2024 the 3x3 team meets again. This time the s
o-called "Fliegender Wechsel" at Gedok Stuttgart spurs a new project p
hase. The location and event serve as a new ground for study, experime
nt and reflection, this time in Germany. Paulina's, Heike's and Nanna'
s textilejourney steps forward. While reflecting on the past, the tea
m-members are sturdily grounded in the present. Maybe some hints of fo
reboding ideas of the respective textile futures are aired...
