SUMMARY:Workshop: Japanese Embroidery: Sashiko and Boro
DESCRIPTION:Nanna’s Sashiko Japanese Textile Workshops\, offered as part
of the OISHII-exhibition extracurricula-activities in spring 2017 at the L
inden Museum Stuttgart\, booked out quickly. This stitching course\, witho
ut the direct museum-affiliation\, is a more in-depth sashiko workshop. In
addition to sashiko patterns\, Japanese boro textile pieces (photo on the
right) are discussed. Underlying meanings of seemingly ordinary patterns
are explained and their use is conveyed. Participants will be given a theo
retical background on which they base their practical exercises.\n\nIn bor
o the focus lies on minimalist aethetics and traces of old age. An ornamen
t or pattern is not recognizable. In rural Japan hand-mended patchwork cot
ton-cloths and blankets existed starting the early 19th century. Before WW
II the lack of materials forced the country-folk to create from scraps. Li
fe was dictated by „mottainai“\, which means „Discard nothing“!\n\
nPlease bring (if available): Small fabric scissors\, medium-heavy white/b
lue cotton fabric. Various darning and embroidery threads in the colors bl
 ue and white.
